Early hotel occupancy rate reported in San Felipe

Authorities said Thursday the hotel occupancy rate was reported in San Felipe at 70 percent for the Holy Week break, but was expected to increase to 98 percent.

Tourism and Conventions Committee Director Christian Ibarra said visitors arrived at the beach, so authorities had already set safeguards and police officers to keep the area safe.

At the San Felipe’s Los Arcos entrance authorities counted 617 vehicles and 2,468 visitors between late Wednesday and early Thursday.

As of Friday, over 50,000 visitors arrived at the city, authorities said.

As of 6 a.m. Thursday, the police had counted 4,699 vehicles driven towards San Felipe at the Highway check point.

The Sports Department had set activities like beach soccer and sand volleyball for those attending the San Felipe beach.

Along with Federal police officers, Municipal Public Safety Department staff will patrol the San Felipe Highway with a special operation, authorities said.

    Awareness asked in canals

A Mexican agency asked residents to refrain from swimming in canals and ditches due to the risk for public’s health.

The National Water Commission in Baja California, or Conagua in Spanish, said while temperatures rise residents go to Mexicali Valley canals, but entering these sites represent a high risk for human life.

The canals in Irrigation District 014 have a single goal — distribute water for agriculture.

The commission said residents in Tecate, Tijuana, and Ensenada go to ditches and dams that keep water for eventual deliverance and not for recreational purposes.

Aquatic plants develop under water in dams and swimmers could get stuck on them, the agency said.

Conagua staff will patrol canals and ditches to ask residents to leave the premises, the agency said in a press release.

The agency recalled that roads adjacent to the canals were constructed to access these facilities and to make maintenance works, not for traffic.

    Manufacturing reports good performance

The manufacturing industry in Baja California reached one of the best performances nationwide during January, said the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, or INEGI in Spanish.

The Mexican agency said this economic sector increased 19.1 percent during the first month of the year, compared to the same month of 2015. The national growth was 6.5 percent.

Baja California, which has grown for 17 consecutive months, reported the third best performance in the northern border and the seventh at the national level.

In terms of employment, manufacturing reported a 3.6 growth, higher than the 2.8 percent reported nationally.

Secretary of Economic Development Carlo Bonfante said the perspectives for the rest of the year are favorable for this sector.
