    Lawmakers support traditional marriage

A group of federal lawmakers announced their support for traditional marriage in Mexico after the federal government endorsed a bill to allow LGBT citizens to get married.

Congressmen with the National Action Party and Social Encounter Party, PAN and PES in Spanish, respectively, said they are committed with life and in favor of life during a meeting held Friday at the state’s government building.

The meeting was attended by Government Secretary Francisco Rueda and his wife, Congresswoman Gina Cruz, as well as Congressmen Luz Argelia Paniagua, Eloísa Talavera, Exaltación González, Wenceslao Martínez, Teodoro Barraza, José Ferreiro and state coordinator of the National Family Front in Baja California Guillermo Montaño.

Cruz recalled President Enrique Peña introduced a bill May 17 to allow marriage equality in the country and said on Sept. 10 demonstrations are scheduled at all state capital cities and a major protest on Sept 24 in Mexico City.

Cristian leaders asked federal lawmakers to reject this measure and convince their colleagues to support their effort against marriage equality.

Cruz said the state has been a leader in the defense of family and life values nationwide.

Last year, Mexicali allowed the first gay couple to get married after a legal battle and a long-discussed controversy.

Cruz asked religious leaders to petition congressmen, even the ones who support the presidential bill to vote against it.

“Those of us who represent the National Action Party know that our ideology and mystique is to defend life, values, right to life and, in this case, it is ver important to convince all the other lawmakers who are part of the Legislature,” she said. “The federal government cannot impose situations without addressing its consequences in Mexican families.”
