    State music band turns 40

The State Music Band of Baja California celebrated Thursday its fortieth anniversary with a special free event.

The 22-member band led by Maestro Juan Antonio Estrada was founded in 1976 by Maestro Pedro Luis Santos Carbó.

On June 16 of that year the band held its very first performance at the then state government headquarters, a building that seats today the Dean’s offices of the Autonomous University of Baja California.

Besides the performances held at official events, the band has also educational programs for preschool and elementary school students and makes presentations at civic events statewide with symphonic and popular music.

Once a month the band performs during the Tardes de Danzón events held at Mexicali’s State Arts Center by the New River Boulevard.

    Homicide suspect arrested

A man who allegedly shot another individual to dead and injured two more in 2013 was arrested by state police officers, said the Secretary of Public Safety.

Authorities said Ministerial and Preventive police officers arrested Miguel Ernesto “Doe,” 29, aka “El Pedrín,” at Fraccionamiento Valle del Pedregal neighborhood in southeastern Mexicali.

State police officers found the suspect while walking near the intersection of Río San Ángel Street and Olivino Street.

During an interview, the suspect denied any charges against him.

Police officers requested assistance from the emergency center and later confirmed the man had two arrest warrants for homicide.

One of the warrants was related to the Oct. 6, 2013, killing of a man by the Airport Dunes at Villa Zapata rural town.

That day, the suspect and another man had an argument with other individuals.

Miguel Ernesto presumably brandished a firearm, threatened the victims and shot at them killing one man and injuring two more, authorities said.

Man caught with vehicle reported stolen

A 27-year-old man was arrested Thursday in possession of a California-registered vehicle that was reported stolen, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

Authorities said at 8:30 a.m. police officers found a man later identified as Carlos “Doe” pushing a 2001 gray Chrysler PT Cruiser with California plates at the intersection of Gómez Morín Boulevard and Monzón Street at Fraccionamiento Villas del Rey neighborhood in southern Mexicali.

Police officers determined the vehicle was reported stolen at the emergency center.

Police agents interviewed the suspect who showed a nervous behavior.

Police officers confirmed the vehicle was reported stolen.

The police arrested and transported the suspect to the police headquarters, authorities said.
