    Ammunition seized at postal office

Dozens of ammunition pieces were found by Mexican postal employees during the weekend inside a package, said the state Secretary of Public Safety.

The agency said workers reported the package at the 9-1-1 emergency hotline.

Workers told authorities some anomalies were detected through the X-ray system.

State police agents arrived at downtown postal office and inspected the package.

Police officers found 71 cartridges of 9 millimeter caliber and two magazines.

The postal office manager told authorities most of the packages are sent from Central Mexico.

    Phone fraud attempts decrease

A state official said Monday the number of phone fraud attempts decreased 43 percent during the first four months of the year compared to the same period of 2016.

Secretary of Public Safety Daniel De La Rosa said last year authorities received 11,127 reports while this year only 6,320 cases have been filed.

In 97 percent of the frustrated cases residents avoided fraud thanks to the preventive education campaigns, the secretary said.

De La Rosa asked residents to be aware as criminals constantly attempt new forms to commit fraud.

Most of the cases are related to false claims of kidnapped relatives, organized crime threats, family members arrest or detention and fake sweepstakes.

Phone fraud calls are made mainly from the states of Jalisco, Colima, Mexico City, Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Tabasco and Sinaloa.

The tour was possible thanks to LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office, the US Department of Commerce, Mexicali Industrial Development Commission and PIMSA representative Xavier Rivas.

The visiting group includes representatives of 11 companies of the aerospace sector.

Bonfante said the meetings seek to improve connection between both cities companies, identify potential business agreements and an increased cooperation.

The tour included a seminar held Monday at a private college in Mexicali about the local 50-year aerospace industry.

The businessmen met Tuesday with Mexicali Mayor Gustavo Sánchez at City Hall.

State officials and teacher union leaders met Monday in order to address workers concerns.

Secretary of Education Miguel Angel Mendoza spoke with Secretary general of Local 37 of the National Education Workers Union Maria Luisa Gutiérrez and Undersecretary of Government Francisco Iribe.

The parties agreed to create a working group to analyze all pending claims of unpaid salaries and retirement benefits.

Mendoza said the state paid 110 million pesos or $6.1 million in unpaid salaries and Christmas bonuses for thousands of interim teachers.

At least two other state agencies are part of a permanent negotiating table created to address teachers concerns.

The union announced another class suspension for upcoming days in which the union’s Local 2 will join.
