Assembly Speaker reacts to death of Mexican national at border crossing

Assembly Speaker Irma Martínez responded to the death of a Mexican national Wednesday at the Calexico Downtown Port of Entry.

In the name of all political parties at the state Legislature, the lawmaker from Tijuana rejected the excessive and disproportionate use of force in the incident.

Miguel Angel Marín Galeana, 35, was shot to dead at midnight on October 21 by a Customs and Border Protection officer after brandishing an 8-inch knife.

Martínez asked for the respect of human rights and the use of all international protocol as well as basic principles of use of force and fire guns approved by the United Nations.

The speaker read a document approved by the 9-member Political Coordinating Board at the state Assembly.

“As a Legislature we must keep watch over the wellbeing and safety of our constituents,” she said. “We consider it is necessary not only support Mexican Consul Carlos Flores Vizcarra but make it ours in a sense that aside from the development of the corresponding investigation the incident must be disapproved with energy.”

Martínez said the U.S. customs agent should have used several other measures to neutralize the alleged threat different from using a weapon.

The insisted American authorities must revise what she called again the excessive use of force.
