    Burglary reported at movie theater

    A man was arrested early Monday after allegedly committing a burglary in a movie theater located at Mexicali’s so-called Golden Zone.

    Mexicali police said the suspect was identified as Jesús Emmanuel “Doe,” 36.

    The suspect was found by a security guard at Cinépolis movie complex at San Pedro Mall at Gómez Morín Boulevard and Cetys Avenue.

    Police officers found the suspect inside one of the movie theaters in possession of 26,498 pesos or $1,472.

    The suspect was arrested and transported to the police headquarters.

    Major road to get rehabilitated

    A state official announced Monday the rehabilitation of Benito Juárez Boulevard in the so-called Mexicali’s tourist zone.

    Infrastructure Works Director Ignacio Arreola Camacho said the 5-mile project has been scheduled in two phases.

    The state will invest 26 million pesos or $1.4 million.

    The project will benefit 35,000 residents and will improve conditions for tourism and trade activities in the area while providing increased safety for travelers.

    Construction is scheduled to conclude by the end of September.

    Arreola Camacho asked drivers to be aware of the project while driving safely through the zone and by taking alternative routes in the next months.

    Police seizes stolen items

    State police officers seized almost 43,000 items in a swap meet that were allegedly taken from the Newell Rubbermaid plant that weeks ago got a warehouse engulfed in flames.

    The Attorney General’s office said the items were valued at 560,000 pesos or $31,111.

    The items were seized Sunday morning in a swap meet at Benito Juárez rural town. 

    Pens, sharpeners, pencils and other items were recovered by agents.

    The agency reported no arrests during the seizure.

    Man found dead in rural area

    A man was found dead Sunday inside his vehicle in rural Mexicali, authorities said.

    José Olivares Rodríguez, 68, was found at 8 a.m. at Ejido Oviedo Mota Reacomodo rural town.

    The deceased man was located inside a white sedan vehicle with an injury in the chest caused by a knife.

    Police agents called paramedics to attend the victim, whom they thought was injured.

    However paramedics confirmed the victim death.

    The body was transported to the state Coroner’s office.

    An autopsy determined the man died due to the knife injury.

    Detectives are handling the case as a homicide.
