Groundbreaking ceremony held for new hospital

A brand-new $51.5 million hospital began construction Thursday during a special ceremony held by state officials.

Authorities began the building of the new Medical Specialties Hospital in eastern Mexicali that will include 135 beds, 38 doctor’s offices and eight surgery rooms.

The funds were provided by the Mexican federal government, according to a state press release.

The hospital will provide services to around 400,000 local, state and regional patients.

Secretary of Public Health Guillermo Trejo said a hospital of such size has not been built since the 1970s in the city.

Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Development Manuel Guevara said the three story building constructed in 14.8 acres, will also include blood banks, imaging areas, anatomic pathology zone, emergency, an intensive care unit, paramedic services, nutritional services, pharmacy, clinic archives, warehouses, dressing rooms, laundry and parking for 520 vehicles.

“We need a hospital that fulfills people’s needs, but also those of employees and patients,” said Governor Francisco Vega. “We have over 3.5 million people affiliated to health-providing service public agencies statewide and we have provided over 15 million examinations. It is a number that can be said fast, but it requires a lot of effort to reach it.”
