    Lawmaker rejects water rate increase

A state lawmaker opposed the proposal to increase water rates statewide as requested by state officials.

Assemblyman Marco Corona, an Institutional Revolutionary Party member from Tijuana, said the proposed increases will impact residents, especially those of limited income, as well as businessmen.

The water rates increases oscillate from 20 to 36 percent.

“The proposed water rate increases for commercial and industrial users will stop investment and would complicate the situation for many businesses, whose expenditures will get impacted in a significant way,” he said. “This is a time in which we must give a push to economic activity and seek an increased job creation.”

Although he accepted state public utilities agencies must address adverse economic conditions, Corona suggested officials to implement cuts and savings instead of requesting rate increases.

He said Tijuana’s commission leaders asked for a 24.45 percent rate increase as well as a 76 percent augmentation of personnel, 11.7 percent more for telephone service, 127 percent more expenditures in internet service and 47.19 percent more funds for other communication services.

“Impacting residents is inadequate,” he said. “We ask the governor to desist from increasing water rates which we will vote against when introduced at the floor.”
