State disburses Christmas bonus payment
A state official said Sunday interim teachers began getting last year’s Christmas bonuses.
Secretary of Education Miguel Ángel Mendoza said the state started transferring funds and releasing checks to teachers for a total of 25 million pesos or $1.38 million.
The official said with these payments the state began to regularize money owed to teachers.
The lack of payment took the Local 37 of the National Education Workers Union, or SNTE in Spanish, out to the streets and off the classrooms at least three days in the last two weeks.
Union teachers protested after a series of negotiations with the state in order to pay the money owed.
Secretary Mendoza said the state has been willing to address the issue by paying 85 million pesos or $4.7 million in salaries owed to interim teachers since January.
Other funds owed to teachers will be paid depending on availability of funds, Mendoza said.
Secretary Mendoza met Monday with teacher union leaders in order to address teachers’ concerns.
