State and city officials held a press conference Monday at Mexicali City Hall in order to invite residents to protect the environment by avoiding from burning bonfires and using fireworks.
State Secretary of Environmental Protection Thelma Castañeda announced that the state will join the December Operation launched by the City of Mexicali on Dec. 1.
Mexicali Environmental Protection Director Luis Flores said residents must make a commitment to set apart from the old style to celebrate Christmas and New Year of starting bonfires and using fireworks.
He asked residents to enjoy the seasonal festivities among family members and without impacting air quality and putting health in risk.
Flores said the city decided to forbid firework-selling companies from opening distribution and sales offices.
Police and fire department staff will seek to inhibit the usage of fireworks and the burning of items like wood, tires, trash and others.
