    Fiestas del Sol 2016 artists announced

    The list of bands and artists who will perform during Mexicali’s Fiestas del Sol 2016 fair was announced Monday.

    In a press conference, officials said the free-of-cost performances begin Sept. 30 with Mexican band Matisse and continue the next day with singer Bebeto.

    Maldita Vecindad rock band is scheduled for Oct. 2 and Mexican regional band Cadetes de Linares for Oct. 3.

    The band formerly known as Bronco, now called El Gigante de América plays Oct. 4, Beatles and Rolling Stones cover bands will do the next day while Playa Limbo will be present Oct. 6.

    Argentinian rock band Enanitos Verdes performs Oct. 7, Paty Cantú on Oct 8., Mexican rock band Panteón Rococó on Oct. 9, and Mexicali artist and composer Jerry Demara on Oct. 10 along with Banda Agua Caliente.

    Jenny and the Mexicats, Sierra León and Colorado Félix play on Oct. 11, Los Muecas, Los Freddy’s and Sonora Dinamita on Oct. 12, HaAsh on Oct. 13, Tijuena’s act Nortec and Guadalajara’s Sussie 4 on Oct. 14, and Río Roma on Oct. 15.

    The fair closes with a concert from Los REcoditos on Oct. 16.

    These bands perform at Isla de las Estrellas and fans can see them just by paying entrance.

    Other artists like Alejandro Fernández, Tigres del Norte, Espinoza Paz, Gloria Trevi, Miguel Mateoss, Fobia and La Arrolladora play at Palenque, which has an additional cost to the entrance tickets.

     

    American artist arrested

    Mexican-American artist Roberto Tapia was arrested early Monday, according to media reports.

    Mexicali police department told reporters Carlos Alberto Aguirre Tapia, no age reported, was arrested at Benito Juárez Boulevard in a vehicle in which he was the passenger.

    The suspects were transported to the police headquarters where police officers determined the singer was under the influence of alcohol.

    Tapia’s alcohol levels were not reported.

    The singer was freed after paying bail, according to the reports.

    Mexicali police Chief Alejandro Monreal said in a press conference the singer attempted to flee, but was eventually arrested.

    Chief Monreal said at 2:40 a.m. police officers observed a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2016 Cadillac Escalade at Francisco Montejano Boulevard at Fraccionamiento Residencias after passing a stop sign.

    Police agents stopped both vehicles, he said.

    The Escalade’s driver did not have any documentation so was asked to drive to the police headquarters to pay a fine, but the driver did not obey police commands and drove towards another way.

    Police agents stopped the vehicle a block away at Benito Juárez Boulevard.

    Tapia was the passenger on the vehicle, Noriega said.

    The chief said the singer was under the influence and was transported to the police headquarters to verify his alcohol levels.

    Tapia paid a fine of 1,100 pesos or $61.11.

    Noriega said no weapons were found inside the vehicle.

    Tapia was Sunday in Mexicali for the inaugural of a crepe restaurant business in a new mall in western Mexicali, according to the singer’s Facebook page.

     

    Homicide suspect arrested

    A man who allegedly killed the employee of a money exchange business five years ago was arrested by Ministerial police officers, said the Attorney General’s office.

    Special Investigations Coordinator in Mexicali David Lozano said Jesús “Doe” was arrested for the murder of Abraham Zazueta Sández, 21, on Feb. 2011.

    According to the official, the victim was about to begin working at the business located at Héctor Terán Boulevard and Eleventh Street at Colonia Vicente Guerrero neighborhood.

    The victim received a bag full of money to start operations when the suspect arrived with the intention to rob the cash.

    The suspect and the victim began fighting and the suspect brandished a firearm and shot the victim who died as a consequence of a shot received on the abdomen.

    Based on witness testimony and other evidence authorities determined the suspect allegedly took part on the robbery.

    The suspect was booked on Mexicali Jail, authorities said.

     

    Manufacturing keeps growing

    State’s manufacturing sector grew 14.3 percent during June compared to the same month of 2015, said the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

    Based on the report, Secretary of Economic Development Carlo Bonfante said the sector has reported increased for 22 consecutive months.

    Baja California’s manufacturing sector growth is above the national average of 9.4 percent, the secretary said.

    The state’s increase was the second largest among the northern Mexican border states and the twelfth nationally.

    Employment in the sector climbed 4.3 percent and salaries increased 5.9 percent in May, the secretary said.

     

    School year begins

    School year began Monday with around 700,000 students back to classrooms at 3,747 schools statewide, the stae Secretary of Education said.

    Also, 33,503 teachers were scheduled to go back to work for the new school year that for the very first time includes two different calendars.

    One of the calendars is a 200 day school year and the other one a shorter version of 185 days. The difference lays on the number of hours dedicated to classes, authorities said.

    Officials said school supervisors, inspectors and teachers began the school year Aug. 10.

    Authorities disbursed over 4.3 million free textbooks for the school year.
