A state lawmaker introduced a bill that, if enacted, would facilitate the process for independent candidates.
Assemblyman Luis Moreno, a Tijuana member of the conservative Social Encounter Party, said some provisions of the Independent Candidacy Law must be eliminated given they violate human rights and stand against rulings set by the Mexican Supreme Court.
These provisions, he added, deny the right to register as write-in candidates to those who run in primary elections under a political party.
The bill seeks to change an article that says independent candidates must not have contended for office in a primary election with any political party three years before registration.
Moreno said the law approved by the Assembly last year was dedicated to certain Mexicali and Tijuana politicians.
The bill was turned to legislative commissions for its discussion.
