    Former secretary appointed to cabinet

A former state official who was indicted and booked in Mexicali Jail under charges of fraud took Thursday the oath of office for a cabinet position.

Guillermo Trejo was announced as the new Secretary of Health, succeeding Francisco Vera who was appointed six months ago.

Trejo took the oath from Secretary of State Francisco Rueda, an office he held before his indictment.

Federal authorities pressed charges for fraud against the incoming secretary two years ago due to the lack of licenses to sell private health insurance from a company he owned along with Secretary of Economic Development Carlo Bonfante.

The new official was arrested at Calexico’s Downtown Port of Entry and turned to Mexican law enforcement agents.

Vera was appointed to a lower-level cabinet position — Medical Specialties Unit Director.

A man who allegedly attempted to blow up a residence with several family members close to the Downtown Port of Entry inside was arrested early Thursday, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

Authorities said at 2:50 a.m. police officers were dispatched to a home located at 1500 Chilpancingo Street at Colonia Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, just west of the Civic Center.

    Soles out of season

Soles de Mexicali professional basketball team was sacked of the 2016-2017 season for undisclosed reasons.

The National Professional Basketball League, or LNBP in Spanish, announced on its official Twitter account on Wednesday that eleven teams will compete during the upcoming season that begins in October.

The Mexicali team was not included on that list.

Team representatives said last week that although rumors regarding the possibility of not taking part of the season the club was ready to play.

Soles Chairman and CEO Federico Díaz said the dollar-peso rate exchange impacted the team’s finances and its ability to pay player salaries.

The team was unable to take part of the League of the Americas tournament due to lack of funds.

However, months ago Soles made a China tour for exhibition games.

Last year, a group of businessman rescued the club that was struggling to make ends meet.

In social media, Soles launched earlier in the week the sale of tickets for the upcoming season.

On Thursday, Soles General Manager Mario Flores said the team was going to participate in the season and announced the departure of Spanish coach Iván Déniz.
