    Four-day weekend announced

    State and local public employees will rest for a long weekend as a state official announced governmental offices will remain closed Friday and Monday.

    State Executive Officer Loreto Quintero said work will be suspended Friday September 16 due to the Mexican Independence Day.

    She also said on Monday September 19 public employees will stay at home due to the celebration of the Public Employee Union anniversary.

    This last celebration is originally on September 22, but was anticipated this time.

    All state offices will remain closed during both days, she added.

    However, state hospitals, state utilities commissions and law enforcement agencies will stay opened in case of emergency.

    All state public employees will return to work on Tuesday, September 20, Loreto said.

     

    Independence Day artists announced

    A well-known artist and a band will perform Thursday night during the Mexicali festivity of Independence Day, according to a press release from the Baja California government.

    Mexican singer Aleks Syntek, along with La Internacional Sonora Dinamita and Tiranos del Norte bands are including in the program.

    Mexico celebrates Thursday the 206 Anniversary of the beginning of the Independence War.

    Governor Francisco Vega will make the traditional “Grito de Independencia” at 10:50 p.m. from the balcony of the State Executive Office building at Mexicali’s Civic Center.

    The program also includes Ballet Folklórico del Estaddo Ehécatl, singer Fernanda Galaviz, Río Nuevo Orchestra and bands Grupo Baja Sierreña and Grupo Chaza.

    A carnival and Mexican food will be available for those attending the celebration.

    The state warned drivers regarding the closure of several streets around the Civic Center beginning at 4 p.m. during Thursday and Friday.

    A military parade is also scheduled early Friday morning at Independencia Avenue, from Hospital Street to Libertad Avenue.

     

    Scam warning released

    A state official warned teacher candidates of an ongoing scam in which unknown suspects are asking for money in exchange of teaching positions.

    State Coordinator of the Professional Teaching Service Martín Gutiérrez said all application processing is free of cost for teaching candidates.

    According to the official, unknown suspects have been calling interim teachers who are covering vacant positions temporarily and promising changes of school for a determined amount of money that must be deposited into a bank account.

    Gutiérrez made clear no money is necessary to get a teaching position in the state.

    He said the Education Reform sets incoming or promoted teachers must follow all evaluation requirements before obtaining a teaching position.

    The coordinator asked those who have received such calls to file a report with the state agency.

     

    Art exhibited at border street

    City officials held a reception Monday for the opening photographic exhibit that was installed at the Casa de la Cultura fence by International Avenue, close to the Port of Entry.

    The exhibit is part of the centennial celebration of the site that was originally house of the first school in the city, whose name was Escuela Cuauhtémoc.

    The exhibit, titled “One Hundred Years Later,” is a compilation of pictures from photographer and publisher Arturo Casillas, which was installed at the facilities’ fence.

    The pictures show different interior places of the arts center including the hall, classrooms and others.

    Municipal Arts and Culture Director Teodoro Pérez invited residents to take part of the centennial celebration.

     

    Man arrested for robbery

    A 33-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday after allegedly committing a robbery against a taxi cab driver, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

    Authorities said police officers found at 12:50 a.m. a man chasing another individual by Yugoslavia Street and Real Virreyes Street.

    Police agents stopped both individuals and the 56-year-old victim told officers that the suspect requested his services and after driving through several sites threatened him and demanded money.

    The suspect allegedly threatened to shoot the victim with a 9-milimeter firearm.

    The suspect attempted to flee on foot and the victim chased him after observing the robber had no weapon.

    Police agents arrested Miguel “Doe,” who was in possession of 1,300 pesos or $72.22.

    The suspect was transported to the police headquarters, authorities said.
