A state official announced the re-launching of a campaign that will provide free trees for Mexicali residents.
Secretary of Environmental Protection Thelma Castañeda said that due to the decrease in temperatures the agency is able to restart the campaign.
Interested residents can request their free trees at the agency’s headquarters located at Benito Juárez Boulevard and Montejano Boulevard, she said.
Applications must be accompanied by an identification copy and a map explaining where the tree will be planted.
“The campaign is interrupted starting June when temperatures are adverse for plant survival and restarts in September when temperatures begin declining,” she said.
Other public agencies and non-profit organizations can apply for free trees, many of which are native and can easily adapt to soil and weather, Castañeda said.
During the first phase of this year’s campaign the agency delivered 15,000 trees and 20,000 additional are ready for release at the Las Arenitas nursery.
Classes suspended in Mexicali
The state Education System announced Monday class suspension in Mexicali for Tuesday due to the heavy rains expected for the day.

The closing was requested by Mexicali’s Civil Protection Municipal Council in order to protect students and facilitate street cleaning and maintenance.
Classes resumed Wednesday, he said.
Rain in other areas of the state allowed authorities to keep schools opened, he said.
The secretary said the school day lost Tuesday will be recovered in the next future.
Damages caused by rain can be reported at the system’s hotline 01 800 788-7322.
Hundreds of pets neutered
A city official said 331 pets have been neutered during the year in order to avoid having dogs and cats on the streets.
Animal Control Center Coordinator Pedro Álvarez said the agency offers services like neutering, vaccination, de-worming and other veterinary services on a permanent basis for free.
Neutering pets prolongs animals’ lives and avoids several illnesses.
Every family must have the number of pets that can maintain appropriately by giving them a clean space to live, besides proper feeding in order to avoid mistreatment and lack of attention, which are animal basic needs, the coordinator said.
The center also offers pet adoption and as of today 400 families have taken home animals that were on the street.
Álvarez said pets can be neutered at the age of four months.
He denied the surgery causes problems with the animal’s behavior like aggressive conduct.
On the contrary, neutering an animal prolongs the pet’s life and avoids if from having reproductive sicknesses.
