An alleged gang member who presumably committed a murder on January in Atwater was arrested Monday by state police officers, said the Attorney General’s office.
Assistant Attorney General in Mexicali Fernando Ramírez said state Ministerial police officers arrested Eric Cruz Madero, 19, at Fraccionamiento Paseo del Sol in southeastern Mexicali.
The suspect allegedly killed Sergio Avelar on January 30.
Authorities said the suspect and the victim had an argument inside a hotel room in Atwater that developed into the murder.
California authorities notified their Baja California counterparts regarding the suspect’s whereabouts.
Madero was turned to U.S. officials after his arrest, Ramírez said.
Drugs, gun seized in rural area
State police officers seized Monday 1,722.6 pounds of marijuana and an Avtomat Kalashnikov rifle in a rural area, said the State Secretary of Public Safety.
Authorities said the seizure was reported at Ejido Nuevo León, southeast of Mexicali.
State Preventive police agents observed along a state highway a 1994 Chrysler Town & Country with the hood open.
By the side of the vehicle police officers observed a man who identified himself as Ernesto “Doe,” 45, who was acting nervous.
The police agents smelled a strong odor of marijuana and inspected the vehicle.
Police officers found under a wrap 58 packages with marijuana and an AK-47 rifle loaded with a magazine and eight cartridges underneath the passenger seat.
Few miles ahead, police officers found by the side of the road 61 additional packages of marijuana, apparently related to the first incident.
The suspect and the drugs were turned to federal authorities.
Man arrested on vehicle reported stolen
Police officers arrested Monday a man who was riding a vehicle that was being chased by its owner, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 11:40 a.m. police agents arrested Miguel “Doe,” 24, at Fraccionamiento Virreyes neighborhood in western Mexicali.
Police officers observed at the area two vehicles on a high speed chase.
From one of the vehicles a woman told police agents that the other vehicle, a black Nissan Sentra with California plates was just stolen moments before.
Police agents stopped the suspect driver who attempted to flee, but was arrested and transported to the police headquarters.
Men arrested for purse robbery
Three individuals, including a minor, were arrested early Tuesday after allegedly robbing a purse to a 50-year-old woman, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 3:34 a.m. a robbery was reported by the victim at Justo Sierra Avenue and Américas Avenue at Colonia Cuauhtémoc neighborhood.
After arrival, police officers were notified by the victim that after exiting a business in the area the suspects took her purse and fled on foot.
Police officers found and arrested José “Doe,” 21; Javier “Doe,” 22 and Erick “Doe,” 17.
The suspects were transported to the police headquarters.
Authorities said the purse containing 200 pesos and several documents was not found.
Special discount offered to students, teachers
A Mexican agency announced a special discount for teachers and students who will travel during summer vacations on bus or train.
The Secretary of Communications and Transportation, or SCT in Spanish, made the discount announcement that will be available until July 31.
The discount goes from 25 to 50 percent of ticket prices.
Travelers must present their Mexican or state government issued school identification cards when purchasing tickets.
The offer includes college and university teachers and students, the agency said.
