    Group demands air quality data

A cyclist group demanded from state and local authorities to comply with a federal regulation that mandates the creation of an air quality monitoring system in cities over 500,000 residents.

MXLiBiCi spokeswoman Carolina Díaz said the group put in several streets posters to push for the request.

“President Peña, we demand to know what we breathe,” the posters read.

The group asks federal authorities to make local officials to comply with a special regulation from the federal Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources.

The local action was replied in at least 25 other Mexican cities Tuesday, Díaz said.

The group also delivered stickers and flyers in downtown and civic center to ask residents to join with their signatures on the campaign.

The cyclist activist said Mexicali has a poor air quality, which is a violation to human rights according to the Mexican Constitution.

“It is not possible that in our city we remain without knowing what we are breathing,” Díaz said. “We don’t want negligent authorities. We are calling both the president and the governor to comply with law and make sure a monitoring network is working and informs appropriately to inhabitants about pollutants we breathe day after day.”

The information would serve to take the appropriate actions to diminish pollution sources through public policy related to health, mobility, environment and others, she said.

The city has already air quality monitoring system that has been moved several times among neighborhoods, and the information can be accessed on the city’s website.

However, Díaz said the systems nationwide work inconsistently, so the group demands a serious commitment to improve monitoring and communication of risks regarding air quality.

The group delivered a letter at the Governor’s Office to make sure authorities address the issue.

    Siblings arrested with cartridges

Two brothers were arrested Tuesday by state police officers in possession of two firearms, a gun and over 400 cartridges, said the State Secretary of Public Safety.

Authorities said the suspects were arrested at Calzada Universidad and Naciones Unidas Street at the Conjunto Urbano Universitario neighborhood.

According to authorities, the suspects were walking by the area with a bag.

After observing police agents, the suspects walked faster.

One of the officers asked them to stop and one of the suspects threw away the bag and attempted to flee.

Jorge Moreno Rodríguez, 52, and brother Roberto Moreno Rodríguez, 53, were arrested on scene.

Police officers found inside the bag 416 cartridges of five different calibers.

The suspects were transported to federal authorities to begin their processing.
