    Lawmakers request additional funds

During a special legislative session, Assembly members approved a motion to request from state and federal officials additional funds to subsidize wheat producers who demand a fair pay for their produce.

On Tuesday, Assembly members asked their federal counterparts and government agencies to provide a helping hand to Mexicali Valley producers.

Assemblyman Armando Espinoza, who leads the Agriculture, Livestock, and Fishing Commission, introduced the bill that was approved unanimously.

According to Espinoza, most wheat producers are on risk on not even recovering their investment and incur in debt.

The state is second in wheat production, only under Sonora, with an annual production of almost 540,000 tons.

The internacional wheat price would give local producers US $160 per ton.

“Unfortunately, international prices have been imposed from the Chicago Stock Exchange and middlemen are speculating”, he said. “Intermediation and speculation are impacting straight basic grain prices in a negative way, an issue that affects state producers”.

The motion asked President Enrique Peña, Governor Francisco Vega, and state and federal officials and lawmakers to address the issue.

    Men indicted for robbery

Two men were indicted separately for a pair of robberies committed against a bank branch and a convenience store, said the Attorney General’s office.

The first suspect indicted was identified as Luis Antemio “Doe”, no age reported, who presumably robbed a Bancoppel Branch at Lázaro Cárdenas Blvd. and Ninth Street in the unincorporated area of González Ortega, also known as Palaco.

The incident was reported on Nov. 27, 2013, when the suspect brandished a firearm to threatened a cashier and demanded money.

The suspect allegedly left the bank with 32,950 pesos or close to US $2,000.

The suspect, who authorities linked to other criminal incidents, left scene with unknown destination.

The Attorney General’s office also reported the indictment against Samuel Enrique “Doe”, 23, who on April 27 entered the Oxxo store of 5 de Mayo Street and Calle del Vencedor at Fraccionamiento Angeles de Puebla, in southeastern Mexicali.

The suspect allegedly took few items and went to the cashier, but instead of providing cash he brandished a knife and demanded money.

The employee apparently gave the suspect 500 pesos as well as the items.

No more details were provided by authorities.
