Protests held by teachers, health providers

Dozens of healthcare providers from public agencies and teachers held two protests Wednesday to demand better services and a stop of violence in a southern state, according to media reports.

Medical doctors and nurses, as well as practitioners, demanded more medicines and staff for the agencies they work at.

Anesthesiologist Julio López told reporters that his coworkers suffer constant reprimands for working without the proper tools to do so.

At the Mexican Institute of Social Security facilities personnel have not enough space to attend patients and medicines are scarce, he said.

Gynecologist Carla Vélez said the situation has been worsening during the course of the last months.

In the meantime, teachers affiliated with the Resistance Movement walked for several blocks of the Civic Center to denounce the killing of nine people in Oaxaca.

They protested against the education reform and to free 80 teachers that were arrested during the Oaxaca demonstrations.

Protesting teachers said a new protest is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m.

    Manufacturing grows 18.5 percent

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography, known in Spanish as INEGI, said manufacturing grew 18.5 percent in Baja California during the first four months of the year.

According to the Monthly Manufacturing Industry poll the real value of manufacturing in the state increased 14.5 percent just in April, compared to the same month of 2015.

The state has observed 20 consecutive months of growth, of which 19 have been of double-digit growth.

The subsectors that have grown the most are machinery and equipment (80.7 percent), wood (29.6 percent), paper (26.8 percent) and transportation equipment (26.25 percent).

State Secretary of Economic Development Carlo Bonfante said the dollar exchange rate has partially caused the increase.

The secretary said job creation increased in this sector 2.6 percent in April and 3.3 percent during the first four months of 2016.
