The National Action Party candidate who won the June 5 Mexicali mayoral election received his majority certification on Saturday, that made him become Mayor elect.
Former Assemblyman Gustavo Sánchez received his certification along with Mirna Rincón and Juan Gastélum, who won the elections of Rosarito and Tijuana, respectively.
Staff with the State Electoral Institute made the final tally of votes and delivered the certificates to other mayoral winning candidates as well.
“Today is a very special day, very important for my life and I know also for the lives of many people,” Sánchez said. “I would like to thank and acknowledge first the work of election authorities.”
Sánchez also showed his gratitude to his fellow party members and campaign volunteers.
“I want to let Mexicali residents in general that we are ready to lead and coordinate efforts of thousands of residents to give this city back that has given us so much,” he said. “We are ready to move forward with a municipal government close to the people (and) that attends people’s needs, that has the characteristics of being transparent and accountable.”
Man indicted for rape
A 45-year-old man was indicted for the rape committed against a 9-year-old girl who was his girlfriend’s granddaughter, said the Attorney General’s office.
Authorities said Abel José “Doe” was indicted for the sexual abuse reported on June 11 in a Angeles de Puebla neighborhood residence in southeastern Mexicali.
According to the indictment, the victim and her family visited the victim’s grandmother.
The suspect allegedly entered one of the bedrooms to assault the girl.
Another minor witnessed the crime and reported the case to her family.
The victim’s mother made a report to the police and officers arrested the suspect.
The crime was verified the rape through psychological and medical examination, authorities said.
The judge gave prosecutors three months to close the investigation.
Man indicted for robbery
A man who allegedly robbed a taxi driver was indicted for the crime, said the Attorney General’s office.
Authorities said Isaí “Doe,” 23, was indicted by a state judge for the June 6 robbery reported at Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard and Fourth Street at the unincorporated area of González Ortega in eastern Mexicali.
According to authorities the suspect allegedly used a knife to threaten a taxi driver in order to steal the victim’s money and a cell phone.
The suspect then fled on foot but was found and arrested by local police officers.
The judge gave prosecutors two months to close the investigation and ordered the suspect to remain in jail while the trial moves forward.
Men arrested for robbery
Two men were arrested Monday morning after allegedly committing a robbery in a fuel gas business, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 3 a.m. a report was made regarding a robbery at Kino Gas station at Colosio Avenue and Santa Isabel Street in western Mexicali.
The victim told police officers that four individuals arrived at the business office to punch him and tie him.
After around two hours attempting to open the business’ safe the suspects left scene with a bicycle and the moneyless cash register.
An employee was notified about the robbery and a report was made to the police.
Law enforcement agents found and arrested Jovany Alberto “Doe,” 29 and Rodolfo “Doe,” 45.
The suspects were transported to the police headquarters.
