Almost half of the calls made to commit phone fraud are related to false kidnappings of family members, said the state Secretary of Public Safety.
In a press release, authorities said 47 percent of calls are related to this topic, followed by organized crime threats with 21 percent and threats for a false lawsuit with 16 percent.
Most of the calls are made from the states of Chihuahua, Sonora, Michoacán and Mexico City, authorities said.
The secretary recalled state prisons have mechanisms that impede prisoners from making such type of calls.
However, authorities said criminals are using phone chips with state area codes for their fraud attempts.
The agency launched recently the app 911MOVILBC with call identification that warns victims before answering the call.
Homicide suspect arrested
A 33-year-old man was arrested Saturday afternoon with an active arrest warrant for homicide, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said police officers arrested at 4:30 p.m. José Macías, 33, at Lerdo Avenue and Altamirano Street in downtown Mexicali.
The man had an arrest warrant for homicide since 2001, when the suspect was 18 years of age.
No additional details were provided.
Drug pushers tied to three cartels
Three drug cartels have been linked to criminal bands in the state dedicated to drug sales, said the state Preventive police department.
Authorities said police officers have dismantled 65 drug sale groups, mostly in Tijuana and Mexicali.
These operations have led to the seizure of 89 million drug doses statewide, especially marijuana, methamphetamine and cocaine.
Most of the groups had ties to the Sinaloa, Arellano Felix and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels, while others were independent, authorities said.
