An Olympic medalist told media outlets the check received weeks ago from Governor Jaime Bonilla has no funds.
Weightlifter Aremi Fuentes said in a press conference the check received Aug. 12 has not been deposited in her bank account.
Bonilla entregó cheques sin fondos a medallistas olímpicos
“The check does not exist,” the Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist said. “It was a lack of respect using my image.”
The Chiapas native recalled that Governor Bonilla’s office even distributed a photograph of her and other Olympic sportsmen like Mexicali archer Luis Alvarez who got a 50,000 peso or about $2,500 check
Fuentes said half of those funds were in fact monies that were a monthly scholarship payment of 3,000 peso or about $175. Professional sportsmen get another 3,500 peso for food.
The checks were given during an event held in Tijuana along with state Sports Director David González Camacho.
“It was a joke,” Fuentes said.
State Olympic sportsmen were forced to pay their own travel expenditures as the state missed from providing such funds.
According to Fuentes, Director González told her Gov. Bonilla was not interested in supporting state sportsmen. The statement was presumably made about the issue before the press conference.
