A state official said little over a fifth of all vehicles inspected last year at smog check centers did not pass.
Secretary of Environmental Protection Thelma Castañeda said 289,752 vehicles were checked in 2016 statewide. Of those, 87 percent were owned by particulars.
The official said vehicles that do not pass the tests surpass up to 10 times the maximum levels allowed by Mexican law of hydrocarbon, three times the levels of nitrogen oxide, eight times the levels of carbon monoxide and half the levels of carbon dioxide.
According to Mexican law a vehicle in good smog emissions standings reduces pollution by up to 30 percent.
“According to the inventory of pollutions transportation in general is responsible of close to 50 percent of all pollution,” she said. “And the inventory of Greenhouse Gas emissions tells that this same sector spreads around 45 percent of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.”
