A state lawmaker asked city and state officials to report on existing available proceedings to measure air quality and to cancel the sale of fireworks when pollution surpasses the maximum allowed limits by the Mexican government.
Assemblyman Jorge Núñez, a Mexicali member of the Baja California state Party, made the request to state Secretary of Environmental Protection Thelma Castañeda and Mexicali Environment Director Luis Flores.
The officials were given five days to report on the matter, according to the resolution.
The report must include all tools, equipment and instrument to measure air quality, especially in Mexicali.
The officials were also asked to create a coordination system for the upcoming days in which residents use fireworks, car tires and other flammable products that pollute the environment.
The lawmaker also requested authorities to inspect all businesses dedicated to the sale of fireworks to enforce environmental law.
Núñez said during December neither the burning of fireworks nor the authorization to install points of sale of fireworks must be allowed due to the increase of air pollution.
