    City officials announce salary cut

Mexicali city officials lead by Mayor Gustavo Sánchez announced a salary reduction and budget cuts of 22 percent in the city’s General Fund.

The mayor said the city council’s Budget Commission approved a salary cut of 20 percent for all council members.

Mayor Sánchez said department heads also agreed to a salary freeze for next year.

“With these actions we are fulfilling the promise made to residents,” Mayor Sánchez said.

City Treasurer Saúl Martínez said the city seeks to cut 188 million pesos or $9.4 million in expenditures like stationery, gasoline, energy, water and others.

City council members agreed to transfer their ability to provide monetary and other types of help for those in need to the Treasurer’s office.

Mayor Sánchez expressed his hopes that next year the city would invest 300 million pesos or $15 million in public works projects.

Mexicali residents will suffer next year with increases in gasoline prices, property taxes and other services provided by the state.
