A former state police officer was arrested Monday at the East Port of Entry for the disappearance of a 30-year-old man whose whereabouts is still unknown, said the Attorney General’s office.
Authorities said in a press release the suspect was identified as Edgar “Doe,” 37, who was detained initially by personnel with the National Immigration Institute and turned to the state Ministerial Police Department.
The former police agent is accused for the disappearance of Jesús Francisco Balderrama Sánchez who was reported missing on April 4, 2011.
The missing man was at a residence located at Fifth Street at Ejido Guadalupe Victoria rural town when several officers from the state Preventive police Department arrived at the scene.
The victim, who worked as a security guard at the site, was accompanied by a minor, authorities said.
Some of the state agents entered the residence while others made a perimeter in the outside.
The victim and the minor were presumably punched by the police officers, who then wrapped the adult in a blanket and put him on a pickup to transport him to an unknown place.
Family members have not seen the victim since, authorities said.
The former cop was booked in Mexicali Jail.
Congresswoman announces highway construction
A Mexican lawmaker announced Monday the construction of a highway that will connect San Felipe with the state’s new agricultural heart.
Congresswoman Nancy Sánchez, a Mexicali member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, said the federal government will invest 50 million pesos or $2.5 million in the construction of a 73.3-mile highway between San Felipe and Valle Chico, located southwest of the port and city.
According to the lawmaker, Valle Chico is about to become the state’s new agricultural development engine that includes livestock, fishing, forestry and eco-tourism.
The delegate of the Mexican Secretary of Communications and Transportation in Baja California Alfonso Padrés said Phase 1 includes the building of 31.6-miles while the rest requires studies and agreements with local producers due to issues with soil, creeks and private property.
Ejido Morelia rural town President David Montaño said producers and property owners are willing to work with federal authorities to make the project come to fruition.
