The first local zika case was reported Tuesday by a state official who asked residents to keep preventative measures in order to avoid getting sick.
Baja California state Chief Epidemiologist Néstor Hernández said the first local zika case was reported in Ensenada on a 25-year-old man who has not traveled outside the state.
The patient has already been released from the hospital, he said.
Authorities said no other local zika cases have been reported so far.
The aedes aegypti mosquito —which also spreads illnesses like dengue, Chikungunya and West Nile Virus— has been found in several Mexicali neighborhoods like Miraflores, División del Norte, Constitución, Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, Carbajal, Esperanza, Popular Centinela, Naranjos, Villa Verde and Baja California, this one located just across Calexico.
Authorities installed over 6,000 traps to detect and monitor mosquitoes, he said.
Hernández asked residents to use long sleeve shirts and pants, cover containers with water, avoid keeping water in containers outdoors, keep doors and windows appropriately locked.
