    Mollusk ban still active

A state official said the ban on fishing and consuming certain bivalve mollusks form the Gulf of California is still active with the exception of one species.

Office of Protection against Sanitary Risks Director Leopoldo Jiménez responded to spread rumors of a reportedly ban lifting.

The official said the only species for which the state has lifted the ban is a clam named “Chione” in Spanish that can be found easily at beaches.

Jiménez said this clam has been examined and come down in analysis on saxitoxin, a chemical that might lead to paralysis and even death.

The ban was set in January after bivalve mollusks extracted in San Felipe and Puertecitos were reported positive on saxitoxin.

The director said these mollusks have been reported well over the permitted levels by Mexican regulations.

Mussels, clams, oysters and other similar mollusks must be at normal levels for three consecutive times in exams to lift the ban, he said.

Jiménez asked tourists to avoid extracting and consuming these mollusks during Spring break.
