Governor reduces self salary by half

Baja California Governor Francisco Vega committed himself during a meeting held with protestors Wednesday to cut his salary by half.

Along with state officials the state’s top public executive showed demonstrators documents from the National Water Commission that determine water is granted for producers.

Mexicali Valley farmers have complained against the opening of Constellation Brands beer plant what will presumably consume most of water available.

Gov. Vega said the project will not produce any impact to farmers.

The payment cut announcement was made in response to one of the main demands made by protestors who have requested his resignation.

Gov. Vega recalled that the vehicle plate renewal and water law issues have already been addressed by the state, as well as the money owed to the Autonomous University of Baja California.

Other state-related issues will be addressed in the upcoming meetings while federal topics will be taken to Mexican authorities.

The three hour meeting was held at the Governors Hall in the Executive Building in which state Human Rights Commission President Melba Olvera took part.

Thousands of immigrant students reported at schools

A state official said tens of thousands of immigrant students from K-12 attend schools appropriately and permanently.

Secretary of Education Mario Herrera said 57,341 students who are children of immigrants, deported people, refugees, indigenous residents and even foreign citizens attend public schools statewide.

The secretary said his agency receives and processes applications from foreign students in a fast and efficient manner in order to comply with a constitutional mandate.

“In Baja California, given our border and bi-national conditions, we have responded in a fast and efficient manner to all requests of revalidation of studies overseas as well as registration for all students to comply with the strategy to provide education services to all children of deported families from kindergarten to high school,” he said.

In a study requested by the agency to the public research institution known as Colef, which stands for Northern Border College, authorities said there is an estimate of 19,000 deported immigrants for this year whose children could get registration at schools.

Last year the agency processed 1,176 requests to revalidate studies from out of the state, which is one of the requirements to register in a school.

All documentation must be reviewed during a 20-day period, he said.

    City to get new agents

The City of Mexicali is about to get little over two dozen new police officers after a graduation ceremony was held at the state Police Academy in Tecate on Wednesday.

Of the new 108 graduated police agents 26 will go to Mexicali and 31 to Tijuana, while the rest correspond to Tecate and Rosarito.

During the graduation ceremony 47 new police officers of the state’s Ministerial police department also concluded their education.

Secretary of Public Safety Daniel De La Rosa acknowledge the graduate officers for their effort after several months at the Police Education and Training Center.

Family members of the police officers pinned the agents during the ceremony.

Cadet Efraín Quezada said his early-age dream was to become a police officer, which came to fruition Wednesday thanks to his perseverance and the support from his family.
