A state lawmaker held a meeting Tuesday to address proposals to changes environmental law.
“These meeting had the goal of discussing, proposing and analyzing actions we must implement for the correct enforcement and modification of environmental law that Baja California requires,” said Assemblyman Jorge Núñez, who also chairs the legislative Economic Development and Binational Trade Commission.
Participants said environmental right violations are crimes against humankind that must be addressed immediately to improve residents’ quality of life.
Among the issues addressed were training for officials, recognition of trash pickers, the building of a solid waste transfer center, and opening of an advisory board.
Núñez said these meetings will continue in the upcoming future in order to gather more proposals to change the law.
Export industry grows in 2016
Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography released a report of the export industry activity during last year that reveals growth in Baja California in terms of company numbers, workers and salaries.
The Mexican agency said 10 additional companies were reported as of December of 2016 compared to the same month of 2015.
According to the report the sector observed the opening of 19,572 new jobs, the second largest for a state in Mexico.
Salaries increased 5.9 percent, growing from 12,906 pesos in 2015 to 13,662 pesos last year.
Three out of every four jobs are located in the Tijuana and Rosarito area, while Mexicali contributes 14.1 percent.
“The exportation industry contributes significantly to our economy through investment, job creation and transfer of technology,” said Secretary of Economic Development Carlo Bonfante.
Man arrested for store robbery
A 35-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly committing a robbery against a convenience store, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said police officers apprehended a man identified only as Carlos “Doe” for his alleged involvement in the robbery of the Oxxo store located at Lombardo Toledano Avenue and Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard at Fraccionamiento Infonavit Cucapa neighborhood in southern Mexicali.
A store employee told officers the suspect arrived at the scene and brandished a knife to demand money.
However, the employee identified the suspect who immediately fled on foot.
The suspect was arrested by police officers moments later in possession of the knife, authorities said.
Police agents transported the individual to the headquarters.
