    Deceased woman found

The body of a dead woman was found Sunday at Colonia Palmar de Orizaba neighborhood in southern Mexicali, according to reports made by the emergency dispatching center.

Authorities said the death was apparently caused by foul play

The victim was identified by the Attorney General’s office as Belén Hernández Cruz, 40.

The agency said the victim’s body had marks of vehicle tires, trauma and sexual assault.

However, the Coroner’s office denied the body had any signs of sexual attack.

The woman was found half-dressed and with no identification card.

The victim was found in the middle of an empty lot located at De La Burocracia Street.

The corpse was found after a report was made at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

A man was killed with knife Sunday outside a residence at Colonia Loma Linda neighborhood, just west of the Civic Center.

The murder was reported at 5 p.m. May 14, authorities said.

The deceased man was identified as Luis Nava Flores, 43.

The victim was found by the side of a Chevrolet Malibu 2001.

The victim was attempting to get on board of the vehicle when the suspect arrived from behind and injured the victim on the neck.

The victim died in minutes, authorities told reporters.

The suspect fled on the bicycle.

The suspect was described as a 6 foot tall man dressed with denim jeans and white t-shirt, witnesses said.

    Governor announces energy subsidy

Governor Francisco Vega announced Sunday the state signed an agreement with a federal agency to give Mexicali residents a subsidy for electricity.

The agreement with the Federal Electricity Commission provides $22.5 million to help low-income residents from May 1 until Oct. 31.

The subsidy reduces service fees for those who consume up to 2,500 kWh a month.

The federal help has been waited by residents for weeks as rising temperatures forced many to turn on their air conditioning units.

State Secretary of Government Francisco Rueda and Mexicali Mayor Gustavo Sánchez also signed the agreement.

    Third illegal dump site closed

City and state authorities closed the third illegal solid waste site in the last weeks.

Secretary of Environmental Protection Thelma Castañeda said the site was located at Colonia Alamitos, next to the East Port of Entry.

State inspectors, city staff and police officers took part of the closure operation.

Residents reported the site located by República de Ecuador Street between Juan de Dios Peza and Manuel Acuña streets.

Mexicali Mayor Gustavo Sánchez said the report was made by residents Wednesday.

Castañeda said a private company has been disposing construction material at the illegal dumping site.

The Secretary said inspectors confirmed the site has operating without proper permits and licenses.

Castañeda said state law imposes fines of up to $88,933 to violators.

Teachers asked to return to schools

A state official urged teachers to get back to the classrooms after authorities paid money owed to interim teachers since January.

Secretary of Education Miguel Angel Mendoza asked teachers to avoid impacting children education by suspending classes.

Last week members of the National Union of Education Workers Local 37 left classrooms and held a series of demonstrations statewide to press the state to pay owed salaries.

The protests were led by Secretary General María Luisa Gutiérrez.

Secretary Mendoza said the state has shown its respect about the demonstrations. However, he asked teachers to utilize a different way to protest that does not impact students.

The official said the state has been looking for possible solutions to address the backlog in retirement benefits to over 3,000 teachers.

Assemblyman Catalino Zavala, who chairs the Legislative Education Commission, committed to follow up the appointments of the new secretaries of Education and Finance in order to address these issues.

The leftist lawmaker recalled the Assembly approved funds in December to cover interim teachers’ salaries and retirement benefits.
