Nepotism highlighted in Mexico’s Judiciary Branch
Over half of Mexican federal judges have hired family members in Circuit 15 of the judiciary branch in Baja California.
A study made by Felipe Borrego Estrada released Wednesday reveals the family relations created within Mexico’s Judiciary Branch in the state.
The study was sponsored by the Mexican think-tank Mexicans United Against Corruption that highlights nepotism by at least 500 judges nationwide who have hired their wives, children, parents, nephews, uncles, aunts and even in-laws.
According to the study the corruption network involves over 7,000 public servants in 31 judiciary circuits.
The organization did not release the names of the judges involved. However, the study pointed out that of the 58 Mexican judges in the state 32 have family members working in different areas in the branch.
The nepotism rate in the state was set by the organization at 55.17 percent.
A sole judge has eleven relatives working in the branch while four have hired their wives or ex-wives.
Of the 1705 employees within circuit 15 the organization said 515 are relatives.
In a press release, the Mexican federal Judiciary Council said in November of 2015 a resolution was approved to limit the number of relatives hired.
