A state agency asked residents to be well aware to avoid swimming in canals and ditches, as well as in beaches with high waves.
Emergency Center Director Francisco Domínguez recalled canals and ditches are not recreational areas due to their risk.
Residents and visitors must swim only on designated beaches with the proper wave conditions.
Last year, nine fatal victims were reported in canals, ditches and beaches. In 2014, authorities reported only two fatal victims.
The agency has a 24-hour available hotline 066, as well as smart phone apps 066MOVILBC and 089MOVILBC to report any incidents.
Deflation reported in Mexicali
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography reported the National Consumer Price Index for the first half of March.
According to the Mexican agency, the city of Mexicali observed a decrease of average prices of 0.58 percent, the largest nationwide.
The border town was followed by Tehuantepec, Oaxaca (-0.31 percent), Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila (-0.24 percent), and San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí (-0.18 percent).
On the other side, Tepic, Nayarit reported the highest price increase during the first 15 days of March with 0.52 percent.
State capital cities like Chihuahua, Colima, Cuernavaca, Guadalajara, and Toluca observed price increases as well, according to the agency.
Restaurant owner to run for mayor
Residents in the region, especially those living in Imperial Valley, are already cognizant about a Japanese food restaurant that opened its doors years ago after crossing the border.
Sushi balls and teriyaki plates have left satisfied at least some of them.
But what Valleyites are not aware is the fact that the bi-national restaurant chain owner plans to run for Mexicali mayor, again.
José Juan Contreras filed candidacy papers Thursday with the Social Encounter Party (or PES in Spanish) for Mayor of Mexicali.
The restaurant owner ran unsuccessfully three years ago for mayor and last year for a congressional seat.
PES spokeswoman Brenda Covarrubias said the registration took place at the party’s headquarters close to Teatro del Estado at noon.
