    New college students welcomed

State and college officials held a special ceremony Wednesday at the Autonomous University of Baja California, or UABC in Spanish, to welcome new incoming students at Mexicali’s main campus.

Dean Juan Oceguera said the students come from states like Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California Sur and, of course, Baja California.

According to the dean, the college is number 17 among the best universities nationwide, according to a Latin American rating.

Statewide, over 19,000 new students were admitted for the semester, of which 6,778 will study in Mexicali. However, thousands of students are left out of the institution due to lack of space.

Dean Oceguera said 49 students come from six different Mexican states, as well as from France, Spain, Germany, Peru, Chile, China and United States.

The college provides service to around 64,000 students in 131 undergraduate and 44 graduate programs.

Baja California Governor Francisco Vega asked students to commit themselves to become the best in the program they have chosen.

The went on to say the state spends 52.6 percent of its budget in education and with other programs the expenditure increased to 64 percent, one of the Mexican states with the highest expenditure in education.
