Candidate reports home purchase in cash

A legislative candidate from Mexicali said in a written report he purchased three properties over a decade ago in cash.

Assembly candidate José Arango, a National Action Party member from Mexicali, exposed on his property report the purchase of two homes and a commercial building between 2003 and 2005 for 715,000 pesos. It is unknown if the property value in Mexican currency was from those dates or in actual prices.

The amount in 2016 prices is US $43,333.

The candidate also said on his report –of which the newsroom has a copy- that he inherited another home in 2002 priced at 253,000 pesos.

Four years ago, Pérez purchased another residence for 730,000 pesos, but this time on a mortgage.

The candidate, who is running for District 4 that encompasses the so-called Golden Zone in eastern Mexicali, reported four bank accounts in four different banks with less than US $24,242.

Pérez, a former Mexicali City Clerk who resigned after the controversial first gay marriage in the city that would have led to the constitutional deposition of Mayor Jaime Díaz, said during last year he earned US $44,175 in salary.

The report was made public on website 3de3.mx, an initiative launched recently to press public officials and candidates to release their property, tax and conflict of interest reports.

Grower Rubén Fernández, who is running as an independent in the rural District 6, said he earned last year close to 1 million pesos or US $59,444.

The former Institutional Revolutionary Party member said he owns eight lots purchased in cash between 1973 and 2013, while his wife has a home donated three years ago.

Fernández also has two vehicles and a tractor.

He reported five bank accounts in Mexico and one in Chase with balances between US $36363 and US $181,818.

Mayoral candidate Elvira Luna is the only other candidate from the state’s capital city that has released her report.

According to the document, in 2014 Luna purchased in cash a residence in Tijuana valued at 1.7 million pesos or little over US $1 million.

The candidate, who is running under the Baja California Party, bought a home in Mexicali in 2005, and for the transaction she got a credit of 850,000 pesos.

In 2010, Luna also purchased in cash a brand-new Mercedes Benz priced at 392,500 pesos or US $23,787. This year, the candidate got a credit to buy a brand-new Mazda vehicle for about the same price, according to her report.

Former Assembly member Francisco García, who is running under the Citizen’s Movement for Mayor of Mexicali, posted a report that cannot be reviewed by the public.
