    Closed-door meeting held

A closed-door meeting was held Tuesday by officials with the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission (CFE in Spanish), rural town residents, and elected officials to address the pollution issue at Cerro Prieto’s geothermal plant.

The gathering was led by CFE Director Enrique Ochoa.

The parties agreed to have a new study by researchers from Mexico’s National Autonomous University beginning next month to analyze the pollution that has spread on soil and air surrounding the plant.

The residents accepted to stop blockades at the plant and grant safety for the commission’s employees.

Congresswoman Nancy Sánchez said once the study’s results are finalized an adequate solution might be found to address actual issues at the plant and prevent from new ones that could arise.

State Undersecretary of Government Javier Gutiérrez was present at the meeting at which reporters did not have access to, as well as Mexicali Mayor Jaime Díaz, state lawmakers Francisco Barraza, Mónica Bedoya and Cynthia Ruiz, as well as congressman Exaltación González and residents.
