    Holy Week operation launched

City officials launched the Holy Week 2016 special operation that seeks to help visitors during the Spring Break.

The ceremony was held at Kilometer 12.5 of the San Felipe Highway and was led by Mayor Jaime Díaz.

The mayor said the operation serves to protect those who visit San Felipe and other towns in Mexicali Valley.

All firefighters and policemen will be available during the upcoming days, as no vacation is authorized for them in this season.

Authorities delivered flyers to those who are traveling towards the Sea of Cortez beaches.

Over 200 police officers were sent to San Felipe.

The city will also increase policemen in other venues like City Zoo, malls and recreational areas.

    Two women indicted for robbery

Two women were indicted Wednesday for their involvement in a robbery against a bus driver, said the Attorney General’s office.

Authorities said the indicted women were identified as Belén, 41, and María Clara, 36.

Assistant Attorney General in Mexicali Fernando Ramírez said on March 16 the suspects were on board along with a minor of an Autotransportes Cachanilla bus at Fraccionamiento Valle del Pedregal in southeastern Mexicali.

The suspects threatened the driver with a knife and demanded money.

The driver attempted to get the knife, but one of the suspects inflicted a wound on is hand.

The suspects then battered the driver who let the wheel go.

The bus impacted a parked big rig and the suspects clashed with the front window.

The victim left the bus by exiting through a window and asked for help.

Police officers arrived and arrested the suspects, who were transported to Mexicali’s General Hospital.

The minor was left under custody of the Teenager’s Prosecuting Office, authorities said.

The judge gave detectives three months to close the investigation, Ramírez said.

    Lawsuit filed against Judiciary officials

State Assembly members filed a lawsuit against the Judiciary Branch requesting Supreme Court Justices to declare unconstitutional the retirement payment recently approved.

Assemblymen Mario Osuna, Juan Molina and Rodolfo Olimpo, who lead key offices within the Legislature, said the goal is to seek a legal decision on the issue and fair usage of public funds.

The Assembly filed the 190-page document Tuesday, the deadline to introduce the document.

“We are sure we will prevail in the matter given it is properly justified and motivated, so we will be expecting the final decision on the issue,” said Osuna.

Several assembly members asked Judiciary Council members to vote down the matter for several weeks.

Chief Justice Jorge Vásquez said the retirement payment, which provides 100 percent of their salary for two years and 80 percent from then on, was based on a federal judge ruling.

However, lawmakers said the same judge ruled justices went too far from the original ruling.

Flores recalled March 31 is the deadline to get a 10 percent discount on property taxes.

The raffle is scheduled for April 5, and the results will be made public three days later.
