    Immigrant donation centers opened

State officials and non-profit organizations announced the opening of two donation receiving centers for those who want to provide food and other items to serve African and Haitian immigrants.

State Secretary of Social Development Alfonso Álvarez said one of the centers is opened at Dispensario Doctor Cañedo at Colonia Bella Vista in Mexicali, just south of the local jail.

The center remains opened from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. seven days of the week, he said.

Among the items authorities will collect are soap, disinfectant, degreaser, chloride, detergent, bathroom tissue, tooth brushes, canned food, beans, rice, lentils, soup, cooking oil, powdered milk and bottles of water.

The items will be distributed among eight immigrant shelters registered by the state as of May, he said.

Álvarez said all public employees were asked to support immigrants through their donations.

In Tijuana, Secretary of Government Francisco Rueda met with the Citizen’s Committee for the Defense of Naturalized and African Mexicans Chair Wilmer Metelus.

Rueda said the state will keep its support for all those immigrants, mostly from Haiti, who have arrived seeking asylum in the United States.

The meeting was attended by Immigrant Support State Council Chair Carlos Mora and Immigrant Support State Director Delia Ávila.
