    Mayor meets state ombudswoman

Mexicali Mayor Jaime Díaz met Tuesday with the Chairwoman of the State Human Rights Commission Melba Olvera to address several issues regarding assistance to vulnerable people in the city.

Mayor Díaz said after the fire that killed 20 people last year at the Ejido Querétaro nursing home the city installed a working group to update registration of such and similar shelters.

The city has registered over 270 centers, of which 83 have been regularized and 77 are still in process.

On September, city council members voted in favor of a new processing that facilitates registration that includes facility inspections and other requirements.

The ombudswoman said the city must focus on senior citizen assistance, an issue that is considered among the most frequent in the state.

    Man arrested for robbery

A 27-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly committing a robbery in a hardware store, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

Authorities said a robbery was reported at 8 a.m. at Ferretería Leo at Colonia Huertas de la Progreso in western Mexicali.

The business owner told police agents that after arriving on scene he observed the front door was damaged.

The security guard was injured, the owner said.

The employee told police agents that three men arrived at 2 a.m. and one of them brandished a firearm while the other two punched him several times.

The suspects left on a 1996 Chevrolet pickup owned by the guard.

Police officers found and stopped the suspect vehicle driven by Saúl “Doe”, who attempted to flee but was eventually arrested.

The suspect was transported to the police headquarters.

    School patrolling operation launched

Mexicali Police Department launched a special operation in order to prevent burglaries and vandalism at schools during summer vacations.

Police Chief Alejandro Monreal said police officers will implement the special operation day and night at the city’s 450 schools both in urban and rural areas.

Law enforcement agents will get support from neighbors and teachers, he said.

The patrolling will take place especially at vulnerable schools that are located at neighborhoods with high crime rates.

The agency held a series of meetings with school principals to make sure the patrolling operates efficiently.

Police officers received copies of the schools keys to arrive and inspect the schools, Monreal said.

The police chief asked residents to report any incident at the emergency hotline 066.
