    Night burglar steals money

Over 60,000 pesos of close to US $4,000 were reported stolen Monday from a safe box and cash registers at Tienda Oasis, located at Lázaro Cárdenas Blvd., according to media reports.

After employees opened the business, the incident was reported to state and local police officers.

The legal advisor of the business refrained detectives from entering the site.

The suspect or suspects entered the store during the early hours and took money from the safe and cash registers, as well as the hard drive of the video camera.

Similar burglaries were reported previously at Pizza Stuff restaurant at Independencia Avenue and Benito Juárez Blvd., where the suspects took from around 47,000 pesos or close to US $3,000, and La Casa de Julia days ago.

    Construction industry improves, official said

A Mexican agency reported the value of the construction industry in Baja California increased 20.2 percent last year, compared to 2014.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography –or INEGI in Spanish- said in the National Poll of Construction Businesses that the industry’s value was 14.7 billion pesos or US $869.9 million. In 2014, the same poll said the industry’s value was 12.3 billion pesos.

This economy sector represents 11 percent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product, said the agency.

Building reported an increase of 49 percent, while electricity and telecommunications observed a growth of 23.3 percent.

Government agencies spent 58 percent of last year’s expenditures in construction –an increase of 2.9 percent compared to 2014-, and reporting a decrease at the end of 2015, the INEGI said.

Private construction increased 16.4 percent in 2015, the third best along the northern border and ninth nationwide.

    Recommendations made to visitors

A state official asked tourists to make sure preventive measures are made on vehicles before making it to the highways.

Secretary of Tourism Oscar Escobedo said drivers must inspect brakes, tires, equipment, engine oil, electric and cooling systems of their vehicles.

He said several agencies like Angeles Verdes (or Green Angels) provide free-of-cost help in case visitors need it on highways.

Escobedo also requested drivers to respect signals, avoid riding over maximum speed levels, refrain from driving while tired or intoxicated, use safety belts and preferably drive during the day time.

Visitors can dial the Tourist Assistance Hotline 078.

However, some agencies will keep working crews in case of an emergency like Attorney General’s office, Mexicali Public Utilities Commission, the Secretary of Public Safety, Emergency Management Agency and state hospitals.

Offices will reopen Monday March 28.
