A non-profit organization received during the weekend 40,000 pesos or $2,247 from the state to support its activities.

State Secretary of Social Development Alfonso Álvarez delivered a check to Gilberto Pacheco, a legal representative of Sociedad Solidaria.

The organization provides help to deported immigrants in terms of food, healthcare, psychological therapy, housing and jobs, among others.

Pacheco said the money will be used to purchase an air conditioning unit.

In 2016, the agency has delivered 849,537 pesos or $47,726 to immigrant-support groups, Álvarez said.

    Full-time schools increase

A state official said 50 more schools will become full-time for the 2016-2017 school year, with half of them located in Mexicali.

Basic Education Undersecretary Leopoldo Guerrero said of those new full-time schools 47 are elementary schools and three junio high schools.

By city, Mexicali will have 23, Ensenada 12, Tijuana seven, San Quintín three, Tecate three and Rosarito two.

Guerrero said authorities seek to have permanent teachers who work full-time to improve education.

The undersecretary went on to say that these schools open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., and some of them until 4 p.m.

Some of these full-time schools will have nutrition programs under the National Crusade against Hunger with a nutrition coordinator.

Among the classes offered by full-time schools are English, arts, healthy life, mathematics and language arts, as well as information technology and communications.

So far the state has 489 full-time schools statewide and 187 in Mexicali.

    Man indicted for homicide

A man was indicted for the homicide and robbery of a cell phone business reported on July 2015, said the Attorney General’s office.

Assistant Attorney General in Mexicali Fernando Ramírez said a judge approved the arrest and indictment against Sergio “Doe,” 28, for the homicide of Abraham Vázquez.

Authorities said the suspect arrived with an accomplice on July 1 at the business located at San Pedro Mezquital Avenue and Río Armería Street in the unincorporated area of González Ortega in eastern Mexicali.

The suspects threatened employees with a firearm and ordered them to lay face down on the floor.

The victim, who was the business manager, was punched several times and stroke with the gun.

The manager was also tied by the hands, authorities said.

The victim was able to untie himself and fought with the suspects.

One of the suspects shot the victim once and both left scene with several cell phones and an employee bag.

Sergio was arrested in a shopping mall in possession of several stolen items.

Witnesses identified the suspect, Ramírez said.

The judge gave prosecutors and detectives six months to close the investigation.

    Homicide suspect arrested

A man who had arrest warrants for homicide and drug sales was arrested Saturday by state police officers, said the Secretary of Public Safety.

In a press release authorities said Luis Manuel “Doe,” 26, was arrested at Fraccionamiento Villas del Rey in southern Mexicali by state Preventive police agents.

The man was found on a street and police officers inspected the suspect.

After obtaining a report from the emergency center officers determined the man had an arrest warrant and a re-arrest warrant for possession of methamphetamine and a homicide committed during a gang fight, authorities said.

    Hearing closed to the media

A state judge denied access to residents and media representatives during the initial hearing against a man who allegedly committed sexual abuse against an 8-month-old baby.

The hearing held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Courtroom 4 of the State’s Justice Center in Mexicali was ordered to be private by Judge Ana María Elías González, based on the National Penal Procedure Code.

The law says that such hearings will remain closed from the public’s eye in case minors are impacted by these procedures.

The suspect, who was identified as Manuel Ernesto “Doe” was arrested last week in Tijuana.

Judge Elías González determined as legal the suspect’s arrest and decided the suspect must remain on jail for the remaining of his trial.

The indictment hearing was scheduled for Thursday, and will also remain private.

    Man indicted for sexual abuse

A man was indicted Saturday by a state judge for a sexual abuse case committed against a 14-year-old girl, said the Attorney General’s office.

Authorities said Erick Yovany “Doe” –no age reported- was indicted based on arguments introduced by a prosecutor and gave investigators four months to close the investigation.

Authorities said Mexicali police agents arrested the suspect after the victim’s family members requested their help.

The incident occurred on June 29 at the victim’s residence at Colonia Ampliación Progreso in western Mexicali.

Authorities said the suspect took advantage that the minor was inside one of the bedrooms to presumably commit the crime.

The minor, who is the suspect’s stepdaughter, was allegedly threatened to be kidnapped.

Family members caught the suspect while committing the rape, authorities said.
