    Residential burglary reported

Two men were arrested Wednesday after allegedly being caught by police officers with an air conditioning unit that was reported stolen from a residence, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

According to authorities, Josué “Doe”, 33, and Edgar “Doe”, 25, were arrested while traveling on a gray 2003 Chevrolet Silverado with California plates at 2:30 p.m.

The suspects had a Frigidaire air conditioning unit in the trucks’ trunk.

The police received a report regarding a residential burglary at Continente Europeo street and Naciones Unidas street at Colonia Nacionalista neighborhood.

The reporting party gave authorities the description of the suspect vehicle.

After stopping the driver, police officers detected some nervousness from the suspects.

The driver and passenger were arrested and transported the police headquarters.

Authorities said the 33-year-old man had an active arrest warrant for residential burglary since last year.

Man arrested for robbery, no evidence found

Mexicali police officers arrested Wednesday afternoon a 30-year-old man for an alleged robbery but found no evidence of the crime.

However, the suspect had an active arrest warrant for arson, authorities said.

The Municipal Public Safety Department said Luis “Doe”, 30, was arrested at 6:12 p.m. on the northern side of Tulicheck Canal in western Mexicali.

The police said a 21-year-old man who works for Rivera gas company told agents the suspect committed a robbery.

The police said the suspect allegedly used a firearm to steal 3,500 pesos, or close to US $220, and fled on a black quad motorcycle.

The suspect was found later at Colonia Reacomodo San Fernando neighborhood, but police agents were unable to find the money, the vehicle, and the gun. The victim recognized the suspect.

The suspect had an active arrest warrant since last year for an arson reported at Ciudad Morelos rural town in eastern Mexicali.

The suspect was transported to the police headquarters.

    American fugitive arrested

A man whom U.S. law enforcement agencies were searching for was arrested Friday in Mexicali, according to the Attorney General’s office.

Assistant Attorney General in Mexicali Fernando Ramírez said the 27-year-old fugitive identified as Blas Santana Valdez was arrested at Ejido Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexicali Valley.

U.S. Marshals requested assistance from state authorities to arrest the Los Angeles resident who allegedly crossed the border to abscond from justice.

The suspect had an arrest warrant for drug trafficking.

Santana Valdez was turned to Mexican immigration authorities to begin his deportation.

    Minor sexual abuse bill introduced

A state lawmaker introduced Thursday a bill that seeks to increase punishment against those who commit sexual abuse against minors.

Assemblywoman Mónica Bedoya, a National Action Party member from Mexicali, introduced a proposal to reform the state’s Penal Code.

If enacted, the bill would impose penalties between nine and 18 years of prison and fines from US $3,181 and up to US $9545 for those who sexually abuse minors of less than 18 years of age by taking advantage of their family, religious, teaching, labor, medical, cultural, domestic and any other type of close relationship.

“Protecting our children and youth must be a priority for any lawmaker given they are the future of our state and our country,” Bedoya said. “This is why the minors superior interest must prevail above anything, which is a right recognized by local and federal laws, including our Constitution, as well as international conventions and treaties signed for by our country.”

The lawmaker denied the punishment proposed is disproportionate, given the Mexican Supreme Court has ruled the goal of legislation like this one seeks to protect some of the most vulnerable in the state.

She recalled many times victims of these crimes remain silent under threat from suspects or for fear parents do not believe them.
