    Teachers acknowledged on their day

    State Secretary of Education Mario Herrera presided Sunday the Teacher’s Day ceremony that acknowledged a group of 783 teachers for their 30- and 40-year career.

    The recognized teachers who accomplished four decades of labor got 73,000 pesos or US $4,294, as well as a gold medal, while those who have worked for three decades received each 45,000 pesos or US $2,647 and a silver medal.

    Herrera said teachers are the backbone of the state’s education and considered them as a valuable asset for Baja California, as they impact on the society’s formation and development.

    The secretary also recognized Luz Divina Trujillo and Andrés Alejandro Garibay Vázquez as Teachers of the Year 2016, who received a gold medal, a plaque and 100,000 pesos or US $5,882.

    Assemblywoman Irma Martínez, who chairs the Legislative Commission on Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, said the state’s greatness cannot be understand without teachers, whom are an example and transmit hard work philosophy.

     

    Man arrested for robbery

    A 25-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly committing a robbery against a convenience store, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

    Authorities said at 9:48 a.m. a robbery was reported at the 7-Eleven store located at Fraccionamiento Angeles de Puebla in southeastern Mexicali.

    A store employee told police officers the suspect arrived on scene and demanded money.

    The suspect wore a gray t shirt, dark denim pants, and a black cap.

    According to the victim, the suspect told he had a firearm with him, but never brandished it, authorities said.

    After taking the money, the suspect fled on a bicycle and was found and arrested moments later.

    The police said the suspect did not have any illicit items, but still was detained.

     

    Teenagers arrested for car burglary

    Two teenagers were arrested early Monday after allegedly attempting to steal a pair of vehicles in eastern Mexicali, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.

    Authorities said at 1:50 a.m. police officers detained Anthony “Doe,” 17, and Jorge “Doe,” 16.

    The minors were arrested at Río Zitácuaro Avenue and Río Coaxtla Street at Fraccionamiento Villa Verde neighborhood.

    The teenagers attempted to open a red 1992 Dodge Caravan vehicle and later a sand-colored 2003 Chevrolet Silverado.

    The second vehicle owner observed the suspects who fled from scene, but were eventually arrested by police agents.

    The suspects were transported to the police headquarters to begin their processing.

     

    City leads in immigrant deportation

    The municipality of Mexicali was fourth nationwide in immigrant deportation reception, according to a report from the Mexican National Immigration Institute, or INM in Spanish.

    The agency said the state’s capital received during the first three months of the year 6,086 immigrants deported from the United States.

    According to the figures, in January the city admitted 1,622 immigrants, while in February it became home for 2,032 deported people and 2,432 in March.

    During the period, 186 minors have been deported through the area.

    Of them, 31 aged 12-17 were with a family member and 133 unaccompanied minors.

    The city also received 21 immigrants less than 11-years-old with a relative and one unaccompanied.

    The agency said of the total immigrants deported to Mexicali, 5,874 accepted some kind of support from Mexico’s federal government, including shelter, education, job offer, transportation, medical assistance, self-employment, and housing.

    During the first three months of the year, the state has accepted 13,538 deported immigrants, becoming third nationwide.

    According to the INM report, the first Port of Entry by which immigrants have been deported during the year is Laredo II by the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge in Ciudad Juárez, with Tijuana’s El Chaparral second and Piedras Negras II in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, in third place.

    Guanajuato, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacán are the first home states from where the immigrants are deported from.
