Bus drivers get drug-tested
The City of Mexicali has held during the last months 131 drug tests to public transportation bus drivers, an official said.
Municipal Transit System Director Alfredo Arenas said last year 100 tests were taken by drivers and last Friday 31 more were tested.
Of the bus drivers tested this year authorities have detected three with positive results. One of them was reported under cocaine use, a second one with methamphetamine and another one with marijuana.
The results were reported immediately to the operating companies for their managers take the appropriate measures to solve the issue, the director said.
Among the companies whose drivers have been tested since 2015 are Atusa, Amarillo y Blanco, Fernando Amilpa, and Estrella del Norte.
Authorities have detected four drivers with positive results — two for methamphetamines and another pair for marijuana use.
Former candidate leads party
A former Mexicali Mayoral candidate leads a local party chairmanship with a different political organization.
Elí Topete, who ran in the 2013 elections under the Institutional Revolutionary Party, was appointed local chair of the leftist Citizen’s Movement Party.
Topete, who leads the Mexico con Valores Foundation statewide as a volunteer, said he feels motivated and animated with his new tasks to serve residents.
“I am convinced that in life one must close cycles,” he said. “I am here with the only goal of serving. We must seek that all political platforms turn to citizens.”
The so-called Orange Party national delegate in the state and Assemblyman Francisco García said the party has only and exclusively an alliance with citizens.
“We are all important, but we will be relevant as long as we do our job,” he said. “The door is open — it is through it that citizens arrive and go.”
State Chairman and former Mexicali City Councilman Job Montoya said the party has not made up the final list of candidates that will be registered for the upcoming midterm elections.
Mayoral candidacies assigned to women
The State Political Council of the Institutional Revolutionary Party –or PRI in Spanish- assigned two of the five mayor races to women — Tecate and Rosarito, the smallest cities in the state.
During a meeting held Monday in Tecate, party members voted in favor of giving men the mayoral candidacies of Tijuana, Mexicali, and Ensenada.
A recent constitutional reform mandated parties to give at least half of the nominations to women for the upcoming midterm election.
In legislative races, the PRI members voted in favor of assigning districts 1, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17 to women and the other eight to men. The first three districts are located in Mexicali.
“I am cognizant of the huge challenge and, in a good part, the PRI’s strength lies in our capacity to include the most loyal,” said PRI state Chairman Chris López. “Candidacies are on the side of those who know how to build alliances and find common goals.”
