The formation of a new city east of Mexicali moved forward after legislators officially received a petition to create the City of González Ortega.
Assemblyman José Félix Arango, a Mexicali member of the National Action Party, said the proposal was introduced at the Assembly that now has to install a special commission to address the issue.
Members of that commission will be in charge of review and analyze the project’s feasibility and approval, as well as organizing a referendum and request the City of Mexicali’s legal opinion.
However, partisan colleagues of the lawmaker, including Mexicali Mayor Gustavo Sánchez, publicly disapproved the idea last week.
The new city formation is up to the State Assembly.
“Personally I want to express my pride to receive such honorable petition as resident and election official,” Arango said. “I am certain and have thorough knowledge that the unincorporated area of Palaco –as the area is also known— has the legal, political, social, financial and economic necessary requirements to become the state’s sixth municipality.”
The fifth and latest region to become a municipality was Rosarito Beach by mid-90s.
Other attempts have been launched to create the cities of San Quintín and San Felipe, but to no avail.
The proposal included an application and signatures of residents supporting the measure.
Arango said area residents had dreamed of the new city formation for over a decade.
The measure was turned to the Legislative Commission of Government, Legislation and Constitutional Affairs, and the Commission on Municipal Affairs.
Senate candidates file as independents
Three individuals were approved to begin gathering signatures to become independent or write-in senatorial candidates during the upcoming Mexican presidential election in 2018, said the National Elections Institute, or INE in Spanish.
Each candidate must obtain signatures equal to 2 percent of registered voters as of Aug 31.
That percentage translates into 52,738 voter signatures. However, at least one percent of those signatures must come from half of the state eight congressional districts.
