    Gas price increase to be addressed

    Baja California Governor Francisco Vega said he plans to take part during the Jan. 9 meeting of the National Governors Conference with federal oficials to address the fuel price increase.

    The Mexican governors scheduled a meeting with top officials with the Secretary of the Treasury and Mexican Petroleum company.

    Vega said he will address the particular issues raised in the state after the price increase, which left Mexican gasoline above all types of fuel in Imperial Valley, including Premium.

    Gov. Vega said he expects to ask the federal agencies to have different prices in the northern border región or similar prices offered in California in order to increase competitiveness.

    He said high prices leads customers to cross the border and purchase fuel in California and inhibates local comsumption.

    Vega, Vice-Chair of the Revenue Commission at the Governors’ Conference, has endorsed the opening of the Mexican market to prívate companies in the fuel sector, but this time he expressed his support to a benefit plan for businesses located in the border.

    The governor said he hopes an agreement can be reached during the meeting in order to decrease the negative impact for residents and businesses.

    Warning

    A federal agency sent a warning Thursday to all those who have held protests nationwide regarding the blockade of highways.

    In a press release, the Secretary of Communications and Transportation, or SCT in Spanish, said Mexican law determines as a public service all federal cargo and passenger services, which are too an important priority for the country’s economy and residents’ lives.

    By executing acts that limit of tend to impede providing this services is also a cause to cancel licenses to providers that can lead to civil en penal actions, the agency said.

    The secretary has remained vigilant of the enforcing of this law and said it will take any necessary measures to discipline violators.

    The agency also asked companies affiliated with the National Transportation Business Chamber to comply with the law.

    Protestors have blocked federal highways for the last days after the fuel price increase went into effect Jan. 1.
