Mexicali Mayor Gustavo Sánchez said 84,000 people in over 22,000 vehicles visited San Felipe during the Holy Week break period.
The mayor said 250 police officers were in charge of the ports safety and no major incidents were reported.
About 60 employees picked up around 42 tons of trash, he added.
According to the report hotel occupancy rates climbed to 100 percent and occupancy at resorts was 90 percent.
San Felipe visitors spent between $6 and $7 million during the period.
The mayor said over 43,000 people visited city parks, of which more than 30,000 attended city zoo.
State Secretary of Tourism Oscar Escobedo said between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday hotel occupancy rates statewide were reported at 79 percent.
The state received 475,000 visitors on over 346,000 vehicles who spent 536 million pesos or $30.6 million.
Escobedo said the number of tourist increased 23 percent compared to last year, while expenditures augmented 15 percent and hotel occupancy rates climbed 12 percent.
The secretary said 25 percent of visitors are from the state, 42 percent are from other Mexican states and the rest come from the US.
Eight caught after residential burglary
Eight individuals were arrested Monday morning after a woman reported the burglary of several items from a home located in western Mexicali, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 9:28 a.m. a burglary was reported at a residence located at Del Refugio Avenue and Lagunita Street at Fraccionamiento Valle de las Misiones subdivision.
A 25-year-old woman told police officers several individuals took an air conditioning unit, two bags of clothes and a black backpack with clothes from her residence.
Police agents found the suspects inside a green 1993 Toyota 4Runner with California plates.
The suspects attempted to flee on foot but were arrested by the police.
The suspects were identified as Cinthya “Doe,” 35, Rosa “Doe,” 26, José “Doe,” 28, Paul “Doe,” 22, Ricardo “Doe,” 19, Alexis “Doe,” 26, Gabriel “Doe,” 19 and Carlos Ricardo “Doe,” 19.
The police found the stolen items inside the vehicle.
The suspects were transported to the police headquarters.
Struck man dies
A man who was asking for money while walking on crutches was killed Monday after the driver of a big rig stroked him close to downtown, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
The police said the accident was reported at Stone Street and López Mateos Boulevard, next to Plaza La Cachanilla shopping mall.
The driver of a white 2000 International cargo truck, owned by Buenavista del Braulio Maldonado company, struck the victim.
The driver, identified by the police as Daniel Aguilar Cortez, 63, attempted to flee but was eventually stopped and arrested, authorities said.
