The mayor did not disclose details regarding these projects.

He also said although the financial burden the city is going through services like trash collection, street lighting, police patrolling and other projects have not been impacted.

    New college students welcomed

The Autonomous University of Baja California Dean Juan Manuel Ocegueda welcomed Tuesday thousands of new students who began the day before their semester.

The ceremony included 3,405 of the 9,461 students who started Monday their classes.

Ocegueda said the university will celebrate this year six decades of contributions to the economic, political, social and education development of the state.

“You must feel proud of joining this prestigious university and feel proud of becoming Cimarrones,” Ocegueda said. “It has been proven that a college degree will make each one of you become better persons and participative citizens in the nation’s problem-solving.”

Based on a ranking set by British company QS Quacquarelly Symonds Ltd., the dean said the college is one of the best public institutions in Northwestern Mexico and the whole country.

He said only 35 out of 100 Mexican youths aged 18-22 have college degrees in the country, while UABC registers seven out of every 10 student candidates.

Some of the new students come from the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Jalisco, Sonora, Tabasco and Mexico City, as well as from countries like Colombia, South Korea and Venezuela.
