A state lawmaker asked his colleagues to launch a series of meetings in order to address a potential minimum wage increase.
Assemblyman Catalino Zavala, a member of the leftist National Regeneration Movement, or Morena in Spanish, said representatives from universities, public agencies, unions and chambers of commerce would take part of the meetings.
Once the parties make an agreement the proposal would be submitted with the National Minimum Wage Commission for its consideration.
Zavala said the minimum wage of about $4 a day does not comply with its goal of satisfying worker needs.
“People’s work does not reflect on their pockets,” he said.
The lawmaker added that given the border location of the state and the volatility reported in Mexican currency causes the departure of money and the dependence on imported, more expensive products.
Recently, Mexico’s Employer Confederation Chair Gustavo De Hoyos proposed to increase minimum wage from 73 to 89.3 pesos.
Zavala said augmenting the minimum wage would cause an increase demand of products, more competitiveness for businesses, development and economic growth, as well as more job opportunities, a decrease of crime rates, more educational opportunities for children and better health conditions.
Suicide attempt frustrated
A Mexicali canine officer frustrated Thursday the attempt of a man who tried to commit suicide and cause damage to a residence, said the Municipal Public Safety Department.
Authorities said at 2:30 p.m. police agents arrested Joel “Doe,” 44, at a residence located at Miguel Bravo Street at Colonia Independencia neighborhood.
A report was made at the emergency dispatching center to notify authorities regarding the suspect.
Police agents found the man inside the home with a gas tank, a lighter and a knife.
The suspect allegedly threatened to take his own life.
A canine unit was transported to the scene.
Police agents asked the man to surrender but to no avail.
Firefighters then threw water on the suspect and the canine agent “Rex” entered to control the suspect.
Men caught with robbed fuel
Three men were caught early Thursday west of Mexicali in possession of around 264 gallons of fuel, according to police reports.
The emergency dispatching center said three unidentified men were arrested at 2:30 a.m. by kilometer mark 57 of the Tijuana Highway by La Rumorosa town in the municipality of Tecate.
Authorities said the suspects were driving a black 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a black trailer in which they had two containers with gasoline.
The suspects left the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Although law enforcement officers implemented a search operation the suspects were not found.
The fuel was taken from the pipelines that supply fuel to Mexicali.
Men indicted for burglary
Two individuals were indicted Thursday for a Feb. 6 burglary reported at a convenience store, said the Attorney General’s office.
Authorities said Jesús Alberto “Doe” and Jonathan “Doe,” no ages reported, were accused of the burglary of an Oxxo store located at 1700 Puerta Del Sol Avenue at Fraccionamiento Los Jazmines subdivision.
According to authorities the suspects took about $1,870 in merchandise and the equivalent of 64.95 in cash in Mexican currency.
Store employees arrived at the store and discover the burglary.
The police was able to identify the suspects through the surveillance cameras installed at the site.
The suspects were found with backpacks and a carton box with the stolen items.
Authorities said the suspects belong to a criminal band that has committed other similar burglaries in western Mexicali.
