A state official requested the federal government to sign an agreement with the European Union and Russia in order to export Baja California’s seafood and mollusks.
Secretary of Fishing Matías Arjona introduced a request with the Mexican Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks, known in Spanish as Cofepris, to sign Memorandums of Understanding to export the state’s products.
Prívate companies fish in the state around 100,000 tons a year of high demand and price species.
Last month, the agency sent a letter to the Mexican government to request the exportation of state products as a response to the difficult trade situation with the United States, to provide market opportunities to Baja California’s seafood companies and to protect jobs.
“It is vital for our state to bring better market opportunities to seafood from our region that along with Sonora, Sinaloa and Baja California Sur produce over 70 percent of the nation’s seafood,” Arjona said.

Thousands protest again
Thousands of Mexicali residents held a march and protest Sunday to demand the ousting of public officials and other issues.
The demonostration began at Vicente Guerrero Monument and concluded at the Three Branch Square at the Civic Center.
Residents asked for the repeal of permits for the building of the Constellation Brands beer plant that according to producers will consume huge amounts of water, putting farmers in jeopardy.
The protestors also requested the reduction of fuel prices and the resignation of President Enrique Peña and Governor Francisco Vega.
Payment to retired teachers, rejection of the privatization of public colleges and the payment of property taxes to businesses and associations were also part of the demands.
Demonstrators also blocked for few hours the Assembly building in demand of the impeachment of lawmakers who voted in favor of the now-repealed water law.
The protest coincided with the Mexican Constitution Centennial.
The oficial celebration, traditionally held at the Civic Center, was moved to San Felipe, which commemorated the 92 Anniversary of its foundation.
“As authorities we respect citizens’ feelings and their rights to expose their points of view, get heard and their issues addressed,” said Secretary of Government Francisco Rueda during the event. “We sincerely stand with the advancement of agreements and to privilege dialogue as the best path to achieve agreements in all posible issues and beyond our differences.”
